Brunei is a sovereign state on the north coast of the island of Borneo. Apart from its coastline with the South China Sea, it is completely surrounded by the state of Sarawak, Malaysia and is separated by two parts by the Sarawak district of Limbang. It is the only sovereign state completely on the island of Borneo, with the remainder of the island belonging to Malaysia and Indonesia. The history of Brunei can be traced back as far as the 7th century. Brunei became a British protectorate in 1888.Following the Japanese wartime occupation during World War II, it formalised a constitution and fought an armed rebellion. Brunei regained its independence from the UK on 1st January 1984. Economic growth has transformed Brunei Darussalam into a newly industrialised country. The capital is Bandar Seri Begawan, the official language is Malay and the Government is a Unitary Islamic constitutional monarchy
